After watching my Master Color Class you may have realized how important having a color wheel in your studio is.

When you know how to use it, it becomes an essential tool, allowing you to pull together lovely and interesting color palettes that coordinate beautifully.

By just knowing a few key principles for choosing fabric palettes, your relationship with color (and your creativity) can completely transform.

Hue, Harmony & Contrast

Hue

Many makers struggle with which colors to pair together. They’ll ask, “okay, I know I want to use green, but what goes with green?” The short answer is that ANY hue can go with green!

Any hue can go with any other hue, as long as they've got a similar tone.

Harmony

Colors near one another on the color wheel are harmonious and will look lovely together and won't "scare the horses", as Kaffe Fassett (a recent Meander speaker) says.

Contrast

Any hue can go with any other hue, as long as you choose a similar tone, so then the question is how much harmony or contrast do you want?

2 or more colors further away from one another on the color wheel contrast one another because they don't share colors in common (green and pink contain no common colors).

Above all else, trust your eye. If your palette looks good--go for it! I believe there is no right or wrong to color. Trust yourself, have fun, and keep making.
